During pregnancy, a small number of pieces get worn again and again. That makes care important. Stretch fabrics and soft waistbands last much longer when they are treated well.
Before washing
- Check the care label first. It always has the final word.
- Turn leggings and jeans inside out to protect the outer surface.
- Close any zips and empty the pockets.
Washing
- Use cold or cool water. Heat is the main enemy of stretch fibres.
- Choose a gentle cycle.
- Use a mild detergent and skip fabric softener, which can coat performance fabrics and reduce stretch.
- Wash with similar items, and avoid towels or anything with velcro that could cause pilling.
Drying
- Air dry flat or on a line whenever you can.
- Avoid high heat in the dryer. It can weaken the waistband over time.
- Do not hang heavy wet jeans by the waistband. Fold them over a rack instead.
Jeans need less washing
Denim does not need washing after every wear. Air it out and spot clean small marks. Your maternity jeans will keep their colour and shape longer.
Storage
Fold leggings and pants rather than hanging them by the waistband, which can stretch it out.
Rotate your pairs
Giving each pair a rest between wears helps the fabric recover. That is one more reason to have two or three bottoms in rotation. Mix any 3 styles: buy 2, get 1 free.
